On the 16th of January, the Law Society welcomed back law students from all years with open arms! The event was the perfect opportunity to get to know our peers, and ask essential questions about exchange, professors, and more.
At James Joyce in Salamanca, we mingled amongst students, some we knew and some complete strangers, and learned far more than I expected. As a member of the law society and a student in the law school myself, I often forget how much I don’t know about the experiences of others, whether it is a different degree, year, or simply a different perspective.
Conversations around the room
First, I spoke to some of my classmates, which may seem like I didn’t branch out (I see it as a warm-up), but as third years, we still have much to learn from our peers who started on different campuses. I’m happy to continue learning more about their classes, professors, and interests. I highly recommend that students still adjusting to their new courses do as much as they can to mix with their Madrid or Segovia counterparts. I think that you’ll regret it otherwise.
I also spoke to some first- and second-year students who had lots of questions about big decisions coming up. For example, our second-year PPLE students will soon have to choose whether to taake the step to become dual degree students and pursue the LLB.
Once I started moving around, I checked in with other tables to see what they had been discussing. The third years studying LLB can apply to study a masters at King’s College London, or a JD at Northwestern. It was wonderful to be able to congratulate our peers on their efforts! It’s extremely impressive to earn a spot in these programs and exciting to see the journeys they will embark on.
I personally had the opportunity to talk about my experience growing up in Beijing with a student who was planning to go on her exchange at Peking University, which I am always excited to do.
There is nothing better than getting to talk about the places you love! I also live vicariously through my peers since I chose not to go on exchange next semester.
Why these events are important
The club’s brand new Events Officer, Aleksandra (congratulations!), said about the event:
“With this event, we hoped to let our community get to know each other more in a relaxed setting. Specifically, we wanted to allow the opportunity for students from different years to connect and share their experiences on how to make the most of our time at IE. I am happy to say the event was a huge success, and you can look forward to many more events soon, both social and professional. We hope to see you there!”
Although sometimes it’s challenging to put yourself out there, it’s a wonderful way to meet new people and find ways to make the most of your studies here at IE. Whether it’s a mixer like this, dinner with the dean, talks and panels, or even field trips, you can broaden your horizons and make friends!
The Law Society and many other clubs at IE organize many events every month, and you’ll miss out if you skip out on them. Mixers, in particular, are one of the more laid-back events that you can attend to get to know people, so grab a friend or come yourself next time!
Thank you so much to our wonderful events officers for organizing this event, and congratulations on the success.
