Barcelona: When and What?

Latest

Waking up to a severe weather alert blasting and my flight being delayed is not what I wish to remember about my last day in Barcelona, but it unfortunately is. Neither is walking 45 minutes to the infamous Park Guell, just for the tickets to be sold out. So, here is my advice on a weekend in Barcelona where none of these things will happen.

When?

Summer months are the best due to the weather and overall spirit of the city, but it can often get too hot and especially too crowded. Even as tourists ourselves, we still do not want to be surrounded by them. So instead of May-August, September is the best month! It is still summer, the sun is perfect and you won’t need a hand fan at all times. There aren’t as many crowds so it won’t be overwhelming, especially for a first time visit.

What?

As extra as making a full itinerary sounds, do it. I tried to, but let the frustration get the best of me and went ahead with the “go with the flow” mindset. While it is absolutely do-able in Barcelona (every street is filled with the most unique little shops and restaurants), the city has so many sightseeing options that an itinerary will help not get distracted.

Sagrada Familia

Standing tall at 300ft, the 140 year old basilica will be sure to capture your heart. As stunning, and free, as it is from the outside, the inside is worth the hype too. You can purchase tickets anywhere online, even asking the hotel reception to book it for you as there is no way of error there.

Park Guell

Designed by the mastermind Antonio Gaudí, Park Guell consists of his architecture designs and peaceful gardens. Gaudí believed art is a place for all people of various working backgrounds, and it should be given equal access. This is why people find it ironic that they sectioned the park off and you must pay €10(+) to enter. Now, yes, you can buy when you arrive, but why take the risk? I learnt the hard way. Buy them online anywhere from 2 days before you are planning to go.

Boqueria Market

Tapas! That’s probably most people’s reaction when telling them you’re going to Barcelona/Spain. To find the best ones, this food market located on the busy street of La Rambla not only has infamous tapas, but food from everywhere. Make your first stop at the meat area and enjoy an Iberico ham, then make a pitstop at the juice stall for a refreshing cold one, and finally end with the oh-so-aesthetic chocolate-covered strawberries. No tickets needed!.

Barceloneta Beach

With great palm trees and the grand W hotel in shot, people often mistake these pictures for Miami. Boasting many hot spot restaurants alongside the beach, Barceloneta is one to not miss, even for me, in the cloudy, windy and spitting of the skies. Many people go for sunset and sit on the benches that are spread along the beach.

Of course, like any big city, there is the issue with pickpocketing. Be aware of your belongings and keep your phone in your front pocket or in your bag at all times.

Do all the above, and you will have an unforgettable stay in this unforgettable city!
