Guide to Winter Dressing

Latest

As we return from winter break and Segovia’s weather gets chillier by the minute, it might be hard to figure out how to dress for winter. With such an international campus, many of us may have never even properly experienced a true cold winter, making it even harder.

However, as we try to navigate the winter times together, I will share a short list of helpful tips on how to dress warm yet still fashionable.

1. Layers

Layering is essential for the confusing weather we are experiencing right now. The street in the morning is chilly, the floor frozen and the wind unbearable, but on campus, heating is to the max and a sauna has been built.

Mastering the art of  layering is a must, after all, nobody wants to look like the michelin man.

Some ideas of inspiration for layering are shown below, but to easily break it up, this is my take: In my opinion, Uniqlo thermal shirts are the best. They’re warm, comfortable, affordable, and offered in various colors and styles. The Heattech line also offers a range of other amazing products, from socks and gloves to pants, the collection is designed to keep your whole body warm in different weather conditions.

You can use this line as your base and build up from there by layering your usual outfit on top, use it as a second skin, if you will.

Other layering techniques include using scarves and gillets underneath your coat, as well as the infamous combination of pretty blouses with sweaters on top.

2. Boots

The most well known shoes for this time are undeniably UGGs. However, as warm as they are, they’re not really weatherproof—especially with Segovias rainy weather  at the moment. That is why, I’d personally recommend leather or rain boots.

This year, Hunter boots have made a huge comeback and look amazing with any outfit. In the same line, riding boots also look very chic and are quite comfortable.

If you’re not the knee-high boot type, I’d go for a lower leather bootie. They adapt better to jeans and pants, like campers.

3. Knitwear and Coats

Finding the perfect coat is not an easy task. The best ones are long coats, covering at least the knee. There are very cute puffers from brands like Ecoalf, but there’s also long soft trench style coats that are equally as amazing.

The important step here is to look closely at the materials, avoiding poor quality fabrics as much as possible. Some very fashionable coats from Zara will likely catch your eye, however, few of their options will actually warm you up.

This is exactly what happens with knit wear. Good quality knitwear, additionally, will not only keep you warmer than elastane or polyester, but also last much longer. It’s true, you have to take better care of it, but  investing in timeless pieces that you will wear for winters to come is worth taking that extra effort and time.

Moreover, something very convenient for this time are matching knit sets. Easy, warm and cozy. Building up an outfit from knitwear is extremely easy whilst chic, think Sophia Richie!

To end this article, just a reminder to stay true to yourself and personal style! These are just some recommendations based on trends and personal experience, but fashion is a world of its own and you should navigate it through what makes you feel best!
