Step Into Crochet
Crochet is a fun and relaxing hobby…Is what I would have said before actually trying it. Let’s not lie, crocheting is hard and so frustrating at first.
I tried for the first time this week, and well, I definitely felt like I was going to break something for the first couple of hours but I ended up really enjoying it.
Here is my advice and some tips (that I learned the hard way) for you to start your crocheting journey off on the right foot :
Choose your yarn carefully:
My first instinct when choosing my yarn was to go for the softer one because I liked it the most. Even though it wasn’t the worst choice, it wasn’t the best either.
If you’re a complete beginner I strongly recommend you to buy a classic light colour cotton yarn. My problem was that, since my yarn was kind of thick, I couldn’t see what I was doing properly. Buying a lighter colour yarn that’s medium thick would solve this problem. Being too thick or too thin would create the same issue.
Buy a pack of different hook sizes
You will see when you buy your yarn that there will be instructions on explaining which hook size you need to use to crochet with the specific variety.
Usually their sizes vary from 2.5mm to 6mm. It can even reach 30mm (but this one is for the future crochet master you’ll soon become).
So, my advice would be to buy a pack that has the classic sizes because sometimes you will find yourself more comfortable with a hook bigger or smaller than the recommended one. If you find a pack with metal ones it should last longer.
Learn the basics
Learn how to do the basic points, you can either check on the internet or buy a book. My personal advice, and what worked the best for me, is to watch a tutorial on YouTube so you can actually see how they are doing their points and replicating it will be much easier.
Start by making a scarf
This advice will save you a lot of time, I promise. Do not fall for those YouTubers who put a beginner in their videos title and then start to do a heart, bag or whatever. I tried them. I can testify that not only did I lose my time but my pride as well when I realised I spent 30 min trying to do what took them a few minutes.
Doing a simple scarf is the easiest way for you to get used to doing the same knit again and again and actually learn the basics.
Be patient with yourself
Easy to say, harder to do. But still, it’s okay if you’re not doing great right off the bat. It’s also okay if your first scarf looks like it was used as a toy by a dog. Don’t worry, everything comes with practice. Today you’re doing bad and the next day without realising it you’re crocheting like a master, ready to overprice your creation in your own small business
Now you have all the basic tools to start your journey with a peaceful mind. You can find all the material you need at Tedi for very good prices.
Don’t give up even if it’s hard at first, as the great Captain Hook said once “ Continue, my dear.”
