The Game Awards is a yearly event that honors the achievements of the gaming industry starting in 2014, this year marks the tenth anniversary of the event. which is usually hosted and produced by Geoff Keighley who previously worked on the game awards predecessor the Spike video game awards.

The Game Awards have a committee that selects the games, players, and creators eligible for an award, to be eligible at minimum games must have been released before a specific date in November. Representatives are people from companies such as Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony. The representatives after deciding who can qualify for each category then allow the audience to vote on which games win each category. The votes are then added along with the representatives’ votes to come to a final decision.

In addition to highlighting achievements and awarding creators, the game awards also premiere new game titles and new information on already released titles. This year’s event hosted in Los Angeles has 30 categories and winners for each. Top anticipated categories such as best narrative, best ongoing game, best RPG, and best Esports game, However, the most sought-after award is Game of the Year. This year was the biggest game award in history with 154 million livestreams shattering their previous viewership records.

Award Winners

While winners for each category were celebrated and awarded some games stood out more than others. Astro Bot, a PlayStation exclusive by Team Asobi won four awards including Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Action/Adventure Game, and Best Family Game. Metaphor: ReFantanzio by Studio Zero was tied for second with Balatro in terms of the number of awards taken, with both games going home with three awards. Metaphor: ReFantanzio won Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, and Best RPG. While Balatro won Best Independent Game, Best Debut Indie Game, and Best Mobile Game. Other fan favorites like  Helldivers 2, League of Legends (lol), and Black Myth: Wukong also went home with awards though not as many as people thought they would. Helldivers 2 got two awards (best ongoing and multiplayer game) while LoL and Black Myth: Wukong each took home one award, Best Esports Game and Best Action Game respectively. 

Along with the winners for games, there was also the award for Content Creator of the Year, Best Esports Athlete, and Best Esports Team, CaseOh, Faker – Lee Sang-hook, and T1 (League of Legends) being the respective winners.

New Games, Entertainment, and Trailers 

The ceremony revealed many trailers and new games coming in the next year with trailers for The Witcher 4 and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet being shown along with announcements for Eden Ring Nightreign, Spit fiction, and a sequel to Okami though as expected there was no new news about GTA VI or the new Nintendo console. Along with this, there were celebrity appearances by Snoop Dogg who performed his new song with an orchestra and Harrison Ford showed up to show support for the new Indiana Jones Troy Baker. In 2023 the game awards failed to address the massive layoffs that happened, but this year the event introduced the Game Changers Award which Amir Satvat a director at Tencent Games USA won for his work in helping laid-off developers find new work.
